Norway has something to offer year-round! Summer (June – August) is ideal for hiking, enjoying long daylight hours, and experiencing the fjords. Shoulder seasons (April – May & September – October) has fewer crowds and the fall foliage is stunning. Winter (November – March) is perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and seeing the Northern Lights.
Norwegian weather is liable to change from day to day, so bring a selection of clothes that you can layer depending on temperature. In addition, bring at least one sweater or jacket (even in the summer), a waterproof coat and/or umbrella and comfortable walking shoes or boots. In the winter, you will need an overcoat, scarf, gloves and warm shoes or boots.
Yes! To see the Northern Lights in Norway, the best time is from late September to early April, with the most reliable viewing between November and February. Northern Norway, especially areas above the Arctic Circle, offers the best chances of seeing the aurora borealis. Many of Brownell’s local partners have guides and tours during these months to help you find the best viewing spot for this natural phenomenon.
