Ecuador

Positioned on the equator between Colombia and Peru, Ecuador offers beautiful scenery, a rich heritage, and many natural wonders. Though small in size, Ecuador is packed with things to do and places to explore. Most travelers know of the famed Galapagos Islands, but smart travelers see that Ecuador has so much more. From the Andes Mountains to the Amazon rainforest to the Pacific Coast, travelers can find something new to see with each day.

Ecuador is divided into four geographically distinct regions. First is La Costa, the Pacific Coast, where travelers can surf, dive, go whale-watching, and relax on the beach. East of La Costa is La Sierra or Andes Mountain area. Fields of corn, potatoes, and grains are spaced between volcanoes and hills. The country’s capital Quito and UNESCO World Heritage Site is in the highlands area. Continue east to La Amazonia, also referred to as El Oriente. Though sparsely populated, the Amazon tropical rainforest features national parks. And of course, several hundred miles off the coast is La Region Insula, which includes the Galapagos Islands.

Quito boasts two of the luxury hotels in Ecuador. Casa Gangotena offers travelers beautiful views of San Francisco Plaza and Virtuoso guests get fabulous amenities like a 6-course tasting dinner for 2 during their stay. Mashpi Lodge is located outside of Quito on a mountain above the tree canopies—a perfect spot for rainforest views.

If you love the thrill of a new adventure, head to the mountain region and climb to the top of Cotopaxi, one of the world’s highest active volcanoes. Try your hand at surfing in the Pacific Ocean, or venture below to surface to scuba dive with the beautiful fish and wildlife. Explore the crystal clear waters of the Amazon by kayak or hike through the quaint villages dotting the Andes Mountains.

Ecuador boasts not only diverse flora, fauna, and georgraphy, but also has fascinating culture. The Spanish influence shines in the architectures, while the Incan ancestry is spotted in local artwork and cuisine. Shop the local markets in the city or head to the hillside haciendas—both offer a truly authentic experience.
