Laura Bassett and family at Vermejo in New Mexico

There’s nothing like a big trip. Whether it’s returning to your favorite spot or exploring a destination across the world, we look forward to these getaways all year. Though we’ve had to tweak our 2020 plans, we’re getting to explore some incredible destinations in our own back yards. From family road trips to Western adventures to beach escapes, we share a few of the beautiful places where we’re now traveling in 2020, plus a few tips for changing your plans. And if you are ready to plan your revised upcoming travel, click here to start planning!

Nantucket

Julie Sudderth – Dallas, TX
“We rented a cottage in the Boat Basin. We booked our stay in 2019, but recently changed our accommodations to make sure we had a full kitchen. We also made sure our cottage has bikes and fishing rods!”

Anne Bluntzer in Montana

Montana

Anne Bluntzer – Houston, TX
“Montana has wide open spaces, great weather, is in the USA so no border issues, and tons of outdoor activities.”

Planning Tip: Make sure you review what is open and if you will be quarantined when you get there, especially coming from hot zones.

Kiawah Island

Winn Harris – Guntersville, AL
Located on the coast of South Carolina, Kiawah Island has five golf courses, nature programs, a spa, and villas.

Maine

Mimi Lichtenstein – Hanover, NH
“Definitely the backcountry and the coast of Maine with my family. I’m hoping to go with my husband or on a scouting trip to see the hotels in the Adirondacks.”

Isle of Palm and St. Augustine

Marion Harbison – Chattanooga, TN
“We chose it because I have always wanted to go to St. Augustine and need to put my feet into the sand. Also, I am a huge fan of Mary Alice Monroe who bases many of her books on turtles on the Isle of Palm.”

The Henderson in Destin, FL

Katy Hentenaar – Nashville, TN
“I selected the destination because its drivable, while still getting a change of scenery and getting beach time.”

Planning Tip: Find out what will/won’t be open on property (pools, spa, dining) ahead of time, and if there are any special restrictions are in place either for the state/county or the hotel. Also learn what safety protocols they have in place.

Four-Seasons-Jackson-Hole-Moulton-Barn

Jackson Hole, WY

Jackson Hole and Yellowstone

Megan Winslett – Wilmington, NC
“We are taking our kids to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. We have had this on our “list” for a while, but as my kids have gotten older, we’ve been more tempted to travel abroad with them. So, this summer lent itself to finally heading out West. We’re going to have the “ranch” experience in Jackson and hike Tetons and go to the rodeo. Then were are going glamping in Yellowstone.”

Asheville, NC

Katherine Gould – Richmond, VA
“We’re spending half of our time in a curated Marriott house outside of town and the rest at the Grand Bohemian. We chose it because it is drivable, has cooler weather, and has always been on my bucket list to visit. It also has lots of opportunity for outdoor activities.”

Whistler, Canada

Kristen Meckem – Bend, OR

Whistler, Canada

“Last year, we started what we hope will be an annual family tradition; a visit to Whistler for the boys to go mountain biking and the girls to enjoy some hiking and spa time. This year we will stay at the Four Seasons Whistler. Whistler is an easy day’s drive for us from Oregon, and we love the beautiful scenery and charming town. If perchance the borders are not open by then, in early September, we will regroup and visit the Four Seasons Jackson Hole instead.”

Jackson Hole, WY

Jessica Walker – Boulder, CO
“Our family is taking a roadtrip to Jackson Hole. Staying at Amangani – stargazing, bike riding, hiking, wildlife with visits to Yellowstone and Grand Teton. It is drivable and many outdoor activity options available.”

Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island

Amanda Watkins – Austin, TX
Relax on the beach, hit the links, pamper yourself in the spa, and enjoy the coastal charm of the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island.

Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee

Laura Bassett and her daughter in Big Bend National Park

Mattie Maisel – Mobile, AL
Just 75 miles south of Atlanta, the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee takes your lake getaway to a new level with five-star service and lux amenities.

Texas Road Trip

Laura Bassett – Dallas, TX
JL Bar Ranch in Sonora, Big Bend National Park, Marfa, Palo Duro Canyon, Taos, Vermejo.  2774 miles total driven and great drivable places from Texas!”

Planning Tip: For National Parks and other destinations, be sure to keep up with the most up-to-date opening and quarantine information

Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain

Martha Rhodes – Richmond, VA
“I have never been, I keep hearing how fabulous it is, it’s been our most popular destination for our clients this summer, and we can drive there. But, what I am most looking forward to is an expected escape from the summer heat and humidity.”

West Texas

Kristen Sandvig – Houston, TX
“We did a West Texas road trip and hit San Antonio, Marfa, and Big Bend National Park.”

New Zealand

Abbay King – Auckland, New Zealand
“We went to Rotorua because it was driving distance (3 hours) from Auckland, and the natural thermal pools compliment a winter vacation. We’re headed to Queenstown in August because it’s NZ’s best winter destination (with the help of Southern Crossings) for relaxation and most likely some snow skiing.”

The family pool at The Henderson

Planning Tip: Plan as much in advance as possible due to things filling up or delayed response times!

Florida

Kimberly Denison – Marion, MS
“We are exploring the beaches of Florida this summer. We went to The Henderson in Destin in early June because it was a last-minute trip and kids love the property. I also went to Acqualina in Miami and The Breakers in Palm Beach. I chose to explore these for my beach lovers who might want a tropical option this fall/winter but don’t want to deal with international travel. Both are great spots for all types of travel: family, adults only, couples, friend trips!”
