Secrets of the South: Our Favorite Southern Cities

The Southern United States is home to a variety of landscapes ranging from lush mountains to pristine beaches to major metropolitan playgrounds. Below is a list of our favorite Southern spots to explore for your next vacation.

Highlands, North Carolina: Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this area is home to many accommodations that feature world renowned spas. From relaxing in natural mineral pools to a round of golf, Highlands is known as a mountain retreat for discerning travelers.

Hilton Head, South Carolina: This Lowcountry resort town is located on an island just off the coast of South Caroline and a quick 20 miles north of Savannah, Georgia. Hilton Head Island features a picturesque beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean and is rich with its own unique culture and place in American history.

Charleston, South Carolina: Charleston is reminiscent of Key West, but in a different setting and time. The small streets and laid back atmosphere are perfect for those seeking a slower pace, while the bustling night life is great for those who really want to let loose while on vacation. With a history dating back to the Revolution era, Charleston is known for its food, architecture and friendly locals. The people of Charleston are so polite that Travel + Leisure Magazine named the town “America’s Most Friendly” in 2011.

Hot Springs, Virginia: Hot Springs is definitely Virginia’s top golf getaway as it is home to The Cascades Course, a golf course designed in 1923 by William S. Flynn and considered to be among the finest in the United States. Here, at the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, you’ll find horseback and carriage rides, fly-fishing, hiking, falconry and a variety of wines. There are 200 vineyards in Virginia, which produce some of the country’s top chardonnays and cabernet francs.

Santa Rosa Beach, Florida: Situated close to Alabama in the Florida panhandle, this quaint area is known for its pristine white sand beaches, beautiful blue water, and colorful beach cottages. This beach town is perfect for a quality family vacation or a romantic weekend getaway.

Nashville, Tennessee: Known worldwide for its country music, Nashville is a bustling southern metropolis. “Music City USA” is filled with soulful history, food, and tunes sure to please all your senses and leave you wanting more of the South. While in Nashville, be sure to visit the Grand Ole Opry, see the city by riverboat, and explore the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Atlanta, Georgia: Bite into the juicy peach that is the ATL. From Buckhead to Midtown to Downtown, Atlanta has great southern cooking and a chic night scene. On nearly every street corner is a culinary pleasure, an elegant shopping experience, or a posche night club perfect for a martini. For the kids, be sure to spend a day at the Georgia Aquarium—the largest in the United States!

New Orleans, Louisiana: Last but certainly not least, “NOLA” is the ultimate good time. In The Big Easy, you will find yourself exploring the charming French Quarter, packed with museums, parks, and of course—bars! Long nights turn in to early mornings on Bourbon Street, and we highly suggest stopping by the oldest bar in the US, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, for a drink in an intimate setting complete with a pianist. Then, make your way down the rest of Bourbon street to stop by countless night clubs, pubs, and shops!
